![]() MICHIGAN SOCIETY OF PLANNING OFFICIALS (MSPO) PRESIDENT'S AWARD The Michigan Society of Planning Officials President’s Award is intended to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the field of planning. For the first time since the Award was initiated in 1971, tradition was broken and this most prestigious award was awarded to a firm rather than an individual. In October 1995, at the 50th anniversary conference of the Michigan Society of Planning Officials, the president of MSPO recognized Mark A. Wyckoff, AICP, president of the Planning & Zoning Center, Inc. and his associates for their outstanding and continuous contributions to the planning community over the previous thirteen years. Most significant, PZC was recognized for the completion of the Michigan's Trend Future project, a landmark study on land use in the State of Michigan. The series of eleven working papers and the final report, Patterns on the Land: Our Choices - Our Future, synthesizes the results of the papers, focuses on land use changes in Michigan and the implications if these trends continue. MICHIGAN CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN PLANNING ASSOCIATION (MAPA) OUTSTANDING PLANNING AWARD The Planning & Zoning Center, Inc. was honored to receive the Michigan Chapter of the American Planning Association 1993 Outstanding Planning Award for preparation of the Grand Traverse Bay Region Development Guidebook. The Guidebook provides local units of government, developers and other property owners with approaches to new development that protects the natural and visual resources of the region. The Guidebook is heavily illustrated with simple drawings that describe various development concerns, how conventional development practices can contribute to the problem and how alternative approaches can protect resources and visual character. Widespread dissemination and implementation of Guidebook principles is now underway through the efforts of New Designs for Growth, sponsored by the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce. The Guidebook is available from the Grand Traverse County Department of Planning, (616) 922-4676. MICHIGAN SOCIETY OF PLANNING OFFICIALS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD In 1985, Mark A Wyckoff, AICP was recipient of a special Michigan Society of Planning Officials "Distinguished Service" Award for his commitment and service as Executive Director from June 1982 - June 1985 of the Michigan Society of Planning Officials, a nonprofit educational organization. During his tenure he was credited for assistance to the Board of Directors in the design and implementation of new programs including development of new fee for service programs (which increased the annual revenue stream by three times); increasing membership by 40%, development and implementation of new basic training programs for planning and zoning commissioners and members of local zoning boards of appeal; organization and coordination of three three-day annual conferences; launching the joint MAPA-MSPO Michigan Planner magazine and generally improving the professional administration of the organization. MICHIGAN CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN PLANNING ASSOCIATION OUTSTANDING PLANNING AWARD At their October 1995 annual conference, the Michigan Chapter of the American Planning Association presented Honorable Mentions in the Outstanding Planning category to the Leelanau County Planning Department and the Planning & Zoning Center, Inc. for the preparation of the Leelanau County General Plan. This Plan offers a good model for county planning efforts elsewhere in the State.
