Michigan Access Management Guidebook

This 169 page, extensively illustrated Guidebook is divided into two main parts, nine chapters and five appendices. Part I identifies common traffic problems and solutions that can be effectively addressed by proper use of various access management techniques. Part II presents model plans and sample ordinances to implement access management at the local level and to coordinate local access management decisions with state, county and local road authorities.

The official title of the Guidebook is Reducing Traffic Congestion and Improving Traffic Safety in Michigan Communities: Access Management Guidebook. It was prepared for the Michigan Department of Transportation by the Planning & Zoning Center, Inc. with assistance from two State Advisory Committees and one National Advisory Committee. The Guidebook is available from the Michigan Society of Planning for $30.00 (includes postage and handling).

Sample Access Management Ordinances are provided in Chapter 8 of the Guidebook. These ordinances can be downloaded in an MS Word format from the Planning & Zoning Center, Inc's website by clicking HERE. Patterns on the Land:
Our Choices--Our Future.
Michigan's Trend Future

This series of eleven working papers (1,700 pages) and a final report, Patterns on the Land: Our Choices-- Our Future. The Final Report synthesizes the key findings of the working papers, and focuses on land use and other changes in Michigan over the past 50 years and the implications if these trends continue. Each of the following topics are addressed: agriculture, demographics, minerals, natural resources, public lands, forestry, transportation, other infrastructure, jobs, tourism and the institutional structure for land use decision making.

Community Planning Handbook

Planning & Zoning Center, Inc. has developed several encyclopedic references, including the Community Planning Handbook: Tools and Techniques for Guiding Community Change. This handbook discusses the planning process, a variety of local technical planning reports and 96 techniques to implement local policies and plans. Techniques span a broad range of topics and include: intergovernmental cooperation, economic development, citizen participation, infrastructure management, natural resource management, open space and farmland protection, transportation management, parks and recreation and planning administration. Each technique includes a description, identifies statutory authority, lists pros and cons and basic planning considerations and references. This publication has proven to be so effective that it is being used as a model by other states and is used as a "textbook" in planning schools. Cost: $45.00.
