In the last decade, Planning & Zoning Center, Inc. associates have prepared and conducted high quality training programs on a variety of planning and zoning issues to over 15, 000 participants in over 400 locations throughout the state of Michigan. Planning & Zoning Basic Training
Training programs on planning and zoning basics that are tailored to meet specific local needs are the most popular training programs we offer. These program are designed to orient the governing body, planning commission, zoning board of appeals and community attorney to their respective roles and responsiblities. Each program is based on the specific plans and development regulations of that community.

Basic Training for Zoning Boards of Appeal
The ZBA training sessions usually go over:
  • Legal basis for zoning
  • Zoning functions - legislative, administrative, quasi-judicial
  • Who does what in local zoning
  • Basic responsibilities of ZBA
  • Appeals of administrative decisions
  • Zoning enforcement appeals
  • Interpretation of the ordinance
  • Variance standards
  • Use variances
  • Nonuse variances
  • Nonconforming uses
  • Public hearing procedures and decision making methods
Development Guidelines for Protecting Community Character
This workshop presents techniques that you can use today to protect the character of your community for generations. For years, the Planning & Zoning Center Inc. has been researching practical methods from around the nation to use in effectively protecting community character. The techniques presented in this workshop deal with a variety of community character issues, such as: Natural Resource Protection, Buffering, Shorelines, Open Space Protection, Land Division, Access Control, Landscape Design Elements, Building Aesthetics, Parking, and Signs.

Zoning and Other Techniques to Protect Open Space Most current zoning ordinances and subdivision regulations unintentionally encourage the loss of farmland, open space and rural character. This program is designed to show the participant how sprawl development is encouraged by typical zoning ordinances and subdivision regulations; how zoning can be used to protect open space and rural character; and show alternative approaches to open space protection that can be used in combination with zoning. These alternatives include: traditional zoning, open space zoning, conservation easements, and land trusts.

Other Commonly Conducted Training Programs include:
  • Land Use Trends and Techniques to Counter Those Trends
  • Land Use Techniques to address particular problems
  • Subdivision Control Act changes
  • Land Division and Access Control Techniques
  • Preparing or Updating a Master Plan
  • Preparing a Growth Management Plan
  • Site Plan Review
  • Sign Regulations
  • Planned Unit Development
  • Capital Improvement Programming
