This workshop presents techniques that you can use today to protect the character of your community for generations. For years, the Planning & Zoning Center Inc. has been researching practical methods from around the nation to use in effectively protecting community character. The techniques presented in this workshop deal with a variety of community character issues, such as: Natural Resource Protection, Buffering, Shorelines, Open Space Protection, Land Division, Access Control, Landscape Design Elements, Building Aesthetics, Parking, and Signs. Zoning and Other Techniques to Protect Open Space Most current zoning ordinances and subdivision regulations unintentionally encourage the loss of farmland, open space and rural character. This program is designed to show the participant how sprawl development is encouraged by typical zoning ordinances and subdivision regulations; how zoning can be used to protect open space and rural character; and show alternative approaches to open space protection that can be used in combination with zoning.
